During the 1950s, the clam played only a bit part in the local maritime context. It was the focus of a different fleet than the king scallop fleet, with a lesser fishing capacity (fleet from the Relecq Kerhuon) and an average annual catch of around 150 tonnes. In the 1960s, with a drop in the king scallop stock, the clam became a substitution resource with productions of over 400 tonnes. The first stages of this evolution are detailed by Le Gall (1969) and Piboubès (1973). Slowly, the fleet developed (from the 70s on, with the progressive arrival of seaweed boats in the fishery) The drop of the production until the disruption of the fishery in the 1980s is the combined consequence of the increase of the fishing capacities with an unfavourable populating... |

The experimental survey done, in august 2005, in coastal marine zone (0 - 20 m) of Zarzis showed the existence of numerous species of shellfishes of which Tricolia speciosa, Smaragdia viridis, Nassarius incrassatus, Cerithium vulgatum and Gibbulla umbilicaris are the most important gasteropods and, Pinctada radiate and Donax trunculus the main bivalves. The biomasses estimation, based on the method of swept area, in the studied zone showed that P. radiate is the most abundant species with about 20 000 tones, followed by C. vulgatum (7 645 tones) and T. speciosa (more than 1 000 tones). The Donax trunculus biomass is very low with only 13 tones. Finally, the abundance indexes distribution cartography permitted us to note that it varies from one species to... |

An integrative simulation framework was built to evaluate the consequences of variability attributable to changes in carrying capacity or the stock’s migration pattern of Atlantic bluefin tuna on the ICCAT stock assessment and management procedures. We also evaluated the performances of stock assessment methods with respect to their ability to provide good estimates of MSY, FMSY and BMSY and tested the robustness of the current ICCAT management strategy to uncertainty about the true dynamics and historical exploitation levels. The results clearly indicate that the VPA performances were seriously impaired if the long-term variations in catches are due to changes in migration/availability. There is further considerable confounding between the underlying... |

Since 1980, the IFREMER research laboratory "Resources Aquacoles", Sete (France), follows during the summer period, the evolution of the commercial stocks of molluscs (mussels and oysters) reared in Thau Lagoon. The data for this estimation are collected, on one hand, by surface observations and, on the other hand, by diving observations. During the years 1980 to 1984, the authors noticed an increase of oyster biomass, during the same period the mussel biomass decreased. The different simulations used to know the total filtration and the biodeposit, have shown that the impact of the increase of the total biomass is not so important as it could be feared. |

Hake Merluccius hubbsi fecundity was estimated with the gravimetric method using ovaries with hydrated oocytes without post-ovulatory follicles. Samples were obtained in three research cruises in the Argentine Sea, off Chubut Province, SW of Peninsula Valdes between 42°S and 45°S, near Isla Escondida, during December 1993, 1994 and 1996, time which coincides with the most important reproductive activity. Relative fecundity values were 722 plus or minus 107, 606 plus or minus 60 and 533 plus or minus 26 oocytes per gram of female without ovaries, respectively. Partial fecundity was adjusted to a potential model for total length and weight without ovaries, corresponding: F=0.9988 Lt3.294 and F=197.91 P1.1585 for 1994 and F=6.9785 Lt2.816 and F=552.22 P0.9889... |

Stock-based and ecosystem-based indicators are used to provide a new diagnosis of the fishing impact and environmental status of European seas. In the seven European marine ecosystems covering the Baltic and the North-east Atlantic, (i) trends in landings since 1950 were examined; (ii) syntheses of the status and trends in fish stocks were consolidated at the ecosystem level; and (iii) trends in ecosystem indicators based on landings and surveys were analysed. We show that yields began to decrease everywhere (except in the Baltic) from the mid-1970s, as a result of the over-exploitation of some major stocks. Fishermen adapted by increasing fishing effort and exploiting a wider part of the ecosystems. This was insufficient to compensate for the decrease in... |

The FLR framework (Fisheries Library for R) is a development effort directed towards the evaluation of fisheries management strategies. The overall goal is to develop a common framework to facilitate collaboration within and across disciplines (e.g. biological, ecological, statistical, mathematical, economic, and social) and, in particular, to ensure that new modelling methods and software are more easily validated and evaluated, as well as becoming widely available once developed. Specifically, the framework details how to implement and link a variety of fishery, biological, and economic software packages so that alternative management strategies and procedures can be evaluated for their robustness to uncertainty before implementation. The design of the... |

IBTS surveys (International Bottom Trawl Survey) are carried out within an international framework. Main countries bordering the North Sea participate to it according to the European Community regulations (EC N°1543/2000 and N° 1639/2001) which specify that countries from E.U. have to carry out surveys at sea in order to evaluate abundance and stocks distribution, independently of commercial fisheries data. The first target of the IBTS survey is to have a diagnosis on the main commercial fish stock and to calculate abundances index by age for these species. This survey started in the years 70’s and gradually standardised. Since the years 80’s, a common protocol is implemented and used by all participants. The same fishing gear and the same working methods... |
